The time of the journey

One can, in principle, go to Madagascar all the year. The stretch of Madagascar on both sides of the Tropic of Capricorn and its complex relief make perilous the explanation of the Malagasy climate. However, we can distinguish two main seasons: the winter, from May to September: in this period, the temperature oscillates between 20 and 27 degrees on the coasts; the highlands experience a similar temperature with, however, evenings and cooler nights. Summer, from November to April; this so-called monsoon period sometimes results in showers at the end of the day, little inconvenience for the smooth running of our travels, the temperature varies from 25 to 35 degrees. (see weather chart)

Health

Madagascar needs to take the same kind of precautions as in any tropical country. Those related to the prevention of malaria which is expanding and some strains are now resistant to Nivaquine; it must be combined with Paludrine for more effective protection. This prophylaxis should be followed regardless of the period of the trip. It is also necessary to take the usual food precautions; drink only bottled water. There is no compulsory vaccine for entry into Malagasy territory, but it is preferable to be vaccinated against DTP (see Institut Pasteur).
